Quickie Review: The Avengers
Yeah, who hasn’t seen this movie? It’s the Holy Text of modern nerdom. But this doesn’t seem like the kind of movie you could write an essay about, right? Nope, this film is deeper than you would expect.
Complex and multi-faceted characters and interactions between them are nothing new in comic book movies (The Dark Knight was nothing but that), and they’ve been a mainstay in comic books for a good time now. This includes the respective series the characters in this film come from.
This film serves as a sequel to four separate films. That can’t be easy to do, but Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, Firefly, and Dr. Horrible; and Writer/Director of this film pulls it off. This film though focuses more on Iron Man and Captain America, since they’re the most popular. The plot is that Loki from Thor has obtained The Cosmic Cube (I know it’s called the Tessaract in the movie, but that’s an object that’s bigger on the inside) from Captain America; and is leading an alien invasion of Earth.
Everyone brings fantastic performances to the table; especially Chris Evans, reprising his role as Captain America. But everyone does their part. You can tell that the actors were giving it their all without getting hammy except when needed. The Avengers is a shining beacon in a world of horrible big-budget film
adaptations. It’s my second favorite film, second only to Apollo 13. Go see it.
